NOTE: Icing needs to be used to make the decorations. Cake frosting is not the right consistency to use. Also, other tip sizes may be used; the resulting design size will change. Basic cake decorating skills are helpful for this project. Refer to the pictured sample for guidance.

1. Hair: Scoop a little white icing into a small bowl and begin coloring with whatever hair color you desire. Use round toothpicks to pierce the foil covering the icing color jar. Dip the color into the white icing. Always use a new clean toothpick to add more color. Stir the icing to blend the color. Once you have the color desired, load the icing into a decorator bag that has already been fitted with a coupler and the #47 basketweave tip.

2. Push the icing down so that it fills the tip, squeeze a little out and wipe the tip clean. Hold the bag so that the tip has the serrated edge on the top. This will create the lines and texture of the hair. Decide on where you want to have the hair part and start to squeeze the icing along the top of one side of the Twinkie. Make the hair as long as you want. Complete the other side of the head.

3. Skirt: Remove and clean the #47 tip. Mix some green icing and load a new bag with the green icing and #47 tip. Starting from about the midpoint of the Twinkie, pipe vertical green lines for the hula skirt. Go all the way to the bottom of the Twinkie. Go completely around the bottom half of the Twinkie.

4. Eyes and Coconut Bra Top: Fill the bag with the #5 round tip with white icing. Make two small dots on the face below the hairline for the eyes. Later, add a tiny black or dark brown dot to the whites of the eyes. Just above the top of the skirt, pierce the Twinkie and make two small mounds of icing. Take the two Whoppers and place on the icing, slightly pushing in to the Twinkie. The icing helps the Whoppers stay in place. This is your coconut bra top.

5. Lei and Flower: Mix an icing color for the lei and flower like orange, yellow or red. Scoop the icing into the bag with the #18 Star tip. For the flower in the hair, hold the bag straight up and squeeze out a star for the flower. For the lei, hold the bag at a 45° angle and with a slight pumping rhythm, pipe a continuous line close together, resembling a fluy carnation lei. Go from one side of the neck, over the top of the “coconuts” and to the other side of the neck.

6. Finishing: Clean the #18 Star Tip and place onto the bag of green icing. Pip a rue line along the top of the skirt, similar to the lei.

Serve your Hula Girl Twinkie for a special treat!
